Water Safety Day w Goldfish Swim School

Summer is coming. As much as we love all the water activities that come with the crazy hot days, there can be there are serious dangers associated with our favorite summer past time. According to  the the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the leading cause of accidental-injury death among children ages 1 to 4. In conjunction with Water Safety Month, the Goldfish Swim Schools hosted a Water Safety Day. Free to all members of the community, kiddos got to snuggle Bubbles the Goldfish & have a mini swim safety lesson focusing on what to do if you fall into the pool.  We practice this at our regular lessons as well. Wes went from not even being able to hold onto the side, to climbing out almost totally unassisted!! Such a confidence booster!!
A local park ranger came out and the kids got to practice putting life jackets on while floating around in his boat. After we worked on all our new water skills we went outside for face painting (or hand painting in Wes' case), the Graeter's Ice Cream truck and dancing with North Point Dance Academy.  The kids were thrilled to even meet  members of the Westerville Police K-9 unit!  We can't wait for next year's Water Safety Day, but don't wait to educate your family about water safety.  It's not just about your kiddos knowing how to swim. It's about having confidence in knowing they can make the right choices around water. My #1 Tip for keeping kiddos safe around any body of water comes from Ashley from the Sullenger's Blog. She lost her precious girl to an accidental drowning. There were 10 adults around at the time.  As parents , whether you are camping, at a water park or just at the local pool make sure at least one adult is designated to have eyes on the kiddos at all times. It's so simple but can seriously save lives!!! Have a plan & BE SAFE!!!!
